This manual has been broken down into sections and groups separating the servicing of various components of the John Deere 440, 440 I, 440 IC, 440 ICD tractor. By using the section index on the preceding page, reference can be made to the table of contents appearing on the first page of each section. This manual contains a brief description of the more complicated systems of the tractor and tells how they operate. Dimensions of many new parts are given as an aid in determining when parts replacement is necessary. Tests and adjustments required to help keep the tractor operating at full efficiency are explained in detail. Complete instructions for Predelivery, Delivery and 150-Hour Services are included in Section 20.

By using this information the serviceman will be sure that the tractor is ready to perform efficiently and economically when it is delivered to the customer. Section 40 covers general service procedures and explains servicing of general nature such as removing and replacing seals, bushings and bearings, measuring and establishing bearing end play and preload. The serviceman should be thoroughly familiar with this section in order that tractor servicing may be done safely in the best manner.

The John Deere “440” Series Tractors include a wheel-type tractor (“440-I”) and a track-type tractor (“440-IC”). These tractors are illustrated in Figures 10-5-1 and 10-5-2. The ‘440-IC” Crawler Tractors with their tracklaying tread are especially useful wherever good flotation and additional traction or extra stability is desirable. The “440-I” Wheel Tractor is a low-built general- purpose tractor. I t offers excellent stability and ground-hugging features. Both Crawler and Wheel Tractors are built rugged and strong to meet the needs o f industrial users. Figure 10-5-3 is a cutaway view showing features of the “440-IC” Crawler Tractor, many of which are also common to the Wheel Tractor.
