This Unit of the Service Manual contains maintenance instructions for the John Deere Model “MT” Tractor. However, since the Model “MT” is similar in many respects to the “M” Tractor, the instructions herein cover only those systems or components of the “MT” which are different from the same systems or components on the “M.” Maintenance instructions for identical parts of both tractors will be found in the Model “M” Unit of the Service Manual. References throughout this Unit of the Manual tell you when it is necessary to use the “M” Unit for maintenance instructions on the “MT” Tractor.

Included in this Unit are complete instructions for removing, repairing, installing, and adjusting the “MT” transmission and differential, brakes, final drives, steering mechanism, wheels, and dual Touch-o-matic. Similar complete instructions for maintenance and repair of the “MT” engine, fuel system, lubricating system, ignition system, cooling system, clutch and center frame, belt pulley, seat, and drawbar will be found in the “M” Unit of the Service Manual.

Complete instructions for testing, repairing, and adjusting the “MT” carburetor, generator, starter, distributor, and other electrical equipment are given in the “General” Unit of the Service Manual. The factory- and field-tested procedures contained in this Unit have proved to be the shortest and most economical methods of maintaining the “MT” Tractor. In addition to complete maintenance procedures, dimensions and wear limits are included to help determine when parts replacement is necessary. Tests and adjustments required to keep the tractor operating at full efficiency are explained in detail. Complete lubrication instructions are also provided.
