Manual Extract: Oil Pressure System

The path of the lubricating oil through the engine begins at the fl.oat screen intake. From there it is taken through the oil pump and then pumped under pressure through a passage into the front main bearing of the crankshaft. From this passage the oil flow divides: one passage leading to the front crank shaft bearing, then through a drilled passage into the camshaft bearing and into the governor mechanism and
gears. The other passage from the front main bearing leads into an oil gallery which runs the full length of the crankcase. From this gallery the oil is forced into the center and rear main bearings and through drilled passages in the crankshaft to the connecting rod bearings.

Another passage from the gallery leads up through the center of the crankcase, through the center sup-port of the rocker arm shaft, and into the rocker arm shaft. Small holes in the shaft allow the oil to flow The path of the lubricating oil through the engine begins at the fl.oat screen intake. through, thereby lubricating the valve mechanism after which the oil then flows down through the push rod tubes, lubricating the center and rear camshaft bearings, cams and valve tappets. Another passage from the oil gallery leads into the oil filter where it is purified and then flows into the oil pan.

The only parts in the engine that are not lubricated directly under pressure or gravity fl.ow and are dependent on lubrication by means of agitation or splash are the pistons and piston pins. For this reason the recommended oil level should be maintained at all times to insure ample lubrication.
Do not over-fill the crankcase, as an excess amount does not improve lubrication. It causes oil consumption, smoking and a high rate of carbon deposit.
