Removing Piston and Connecting Rod Assemblies Whenever it is necessary to service the piston and connecting rod assemblies, they should be removed as follows:
Fig. 38 – Removing Piston and Connecting Rod Assembly 1. Drain engine oil.
2. Remove rocker arm cover, rocker assembly and cylinder head as outlined earlier.
3. Remove oil pan.
4. Disconnect and remove the oil intake line assembly, complete with oil strainer.
5. Turn the crankshaft until the piston to be removed is at the bottom of its stroke.
6. Carefully remove any carbon that may have formed at the top of the cylinder liner bore.
7. Very carefully feel the upper piston ring travel area to determine if there is any cylinder ridge present inside the cylinder liner.
If there is a cylinder ridge in the liner, determine if the cylinder liner is to be re-used and carefully remove the ridge to allow removal of the piston and connecting rod assembly.
Refer to heading “Inspecting the Cylinder Liners” for additional information concerning the liners.
8. Remove the self-locking nuts from the connecting rod bolts and remove the bearing cap AND THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS.
9. Remove piston and connecting rod assembly from top of block, as shown in Fig. 3S.
