This manual contains instructions on the operation, maintenance, and overhaul of the basic General Motors series 2-53 diesel en­gines as used in various John Deere trac­tors. The servicing procedure for all other components of the tractor is covered in the service manual for that particular tractor.
This Service Manual has been written by the factory service department to be used as a valuable tool in your shop. Use it as a textbook to train new personnel who may be unfamiliar with the diesel principles. Use it daily in your shop to take the guesswork out of diesel engine servicing.
Service tool references in the text are followed by a vendor’s tool number which serves to identify each tool. The special tools mentioned in this manual have been developed for the series 2-53 diesel engine and are recommended to facilitate service operations.
