Manual Extract: Water Pump Inspection
With the water pump completely disassembled, the component parts can easily be cleaned and inspected for wear, cracks and burrs. All parts that are worn or damaged must be replaced. Ball Bearings – Inspect for nicks, burrs, and grooves that may cause binding of the balls or wear on the races. Replace if damaged.
Pump Seal – Replace anytime the water pump is disassembled.
Bushing (If So Equipped) – Inspect for nicks, grooves, burrs and wear. Bushing inside diameter when installed .874″ to .875″. Clearance between bushing and shaft .0015″ to .004″.
Pump Shaft – Inspect for nicks, grooves and burrs. Shaft diameter at bushing contact point – .8710″ to .8725″. Replace if worn or damaged.
Impeller – Inspect for cracks, damaged vanes and smoothness at seal contact area.
Replace if necessary.
NOTE Pumps having two bearings have a seat (13) in the impeller which the shaft seal rides against and is replaceable.
