Manual Extract: Compressor – Test
Check the following when the compressor power is insufficient: • Narrowed pressure line (carbon deposits) • System integrity (leaks)
• If no defect is found, remove the cylinder head and test the suction plate and pressure plate along with the sealing.
• If the amount of carbon is high, check temperature conditions and compressor oil consumption • When replacing the compressor, check the discharge line to ensure it has not been fouled with carbon. If the line if fouled, replace it (and the pressure controller and air dryer also if necessary).
With the engine heated to operating temperature, follow the these instructions to check the oil consumption of the compressor:
1. Disconnect the suction line.
2. Disconnect the discharge line.
3. Let the engine run for about 2 min at half of the maximum RPM.
4. Position white paper on a fixed base in front of the compressor outlet —against air flow— for 5 min at an engine speed of about 1500 RPM.
5. The compressor will leave a light oil mist on the paper when the oil consumption is low.
If oil consumption is high, a focused black field will appear on the paper. A black field indicates a high level of wear inside the compressor.
