Manual Extract Starting Circuit
The starting circuit consists of the starter, starter solenoid, key switch, neutral start switch, battery, and associated wiring and cables.
When the key switch is turned to Start position and the transmission is in Neutral (which closes the neutral start switch), the starter solenoid is energized.
The solenoid plunger retracts and slides the starter pinion into engagement with the flywheel ring gear.
When the solenoid plunger reaches the end of its travel, it closes the solenoid contacts and current flows to the armature and field windings which causes the starter to crank the engine.
To prevent the engine from rotating the starter after the engine starts, the starter is equipped with a one-way roller clutch. The roller clutch allows the armature to drive the pinion but the drive is disengaged if the pinion attempts to drive the armature.
When the key switch is released, the circuit through the solenoid is broken. The spring in the solenoid returns the solenoid plunger to its original position, disengaging the pinion from the flywheel.
