Manual Extract: Precautions To Be Observed When Servicing The Delco Remy Alternator System

On spark ignition engines, it is recommended that the ignition coil primary wire be disconnected when checking the alternator circuits.

This will prevent damage to the ignition points and accidental starting of the engine.
Do not use steam cleaner or cleaning solvent to clean the alternator. These could be harmful to the internal parts of the alternator.

Care should be taken not to spill oil into the vents of the alternator when servicing the engine.
This could prevent the alternator from charging.

Always turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the battery cables when performing
work on the regulator or alternator to prevent shorting out of the ” B A T ” terminal lead.
At regular intervals, inspect the terminals for corrosiion, loose connections, and wiring for damaged insulation. These conditions could cause the regulator to sense a lower than normal battery voltage.

Check the mounting bolts for tightness, and the belt for alignment, proper tension and wear.
These conditions could cause the alternator pulley to slip.

The following test illustrations will show individual component hookups but tests may be performed using the self contained test equipment making connections as shown and according to the test equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

The alternator and regulator should be tested on the unit, using circuit conductors and accessories that are a permanent part of the charging system. Testing the system in this manner will result in more accurate problem identification.

Before testing the charging system check the following:
1 . Battery: The battery should be at least 75% full charge with the battery voltage up to 12 volts.
2. Connections: All connections of charging system components should be tight and free of corrosion or other foreign matter that would cause a poor connection and would reduce the battery voltage to the voltage regulator.
3. Drive belt: The drive belt should be free of grease or oil which may cause slippage under load. Check for proper tension.
