Manual Extract: Tracks – Static description – Track link wear

Link uneven wear
As the tracks rotate, the rail surfaces of the line contact the idlers, rollers and carrier rollers. The wear pattern that develops becomes wavy or scalloped. These wear patterns are normal.
The forward and rearward surfaces wear faster because of the narrow link overlap. The center wear surface is sliding wear due to a reduced contact area with the idler wheel.

Side wear of the link rail
Contact with the rollers and idler flanges will cause side wear of the link rail. This wear increases with side hill operation, turns, uneven terrain, misalignment, or track shoes that are too wide. Increased track pitch due to bushing to pin wear causes the track to become loose.
The loose track chain flexes from side to side which increases the side loads and side wear.

Wear on the inside surface of the link
Wear on the inside of the link is caused by rotating contact with the next link when seal failure occurs. Bushing end wear and lack of link separation occurs. If the link rails are not worn excessively, turn the pins and the bushings and then reseal.

Pin boss top wear
Contact with the roller flanges due to link rail surface wear and roller tread surface wear cause pin boss top wear.
You must correct this condition or a rebuild of the track chain will not be possible. The machine will start to vibrate.
